When You Know Better: Moving Forward After 50
Do you ever play the “I wish I knew ______ when I was ______” game?
You know, the one where you imagine that if only you had known then what you know now, your life would have turned out differently. Maybe you’d be happier, wealthier, thinner, healthier. Maybe you’d have a better relationship with your kids or more balance in your life.
It’s a tempting mindset, and social media feeds it daily — every ad, every “before and after,” every promise that if we just follow this program or buy that product, we can rewrite our story.
But here’s what I've found: that kind of thinking keeps us tethered to the past. We can’t hop in a time machine and undo choices or circumstances. And honestly? That’s not where our power lives.
What’s healthy — and what’s liberating — is to acknowledge, gather, and move forward. To honor what we’ve learned, integrate it into how we live now, and step into the next chapter with grace, courage, and curiosity.
As Maya Angelou wisely said:
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
For women 50 and beyond, this quote isn’t just a reminder — it’s a roadmap.
We are the generation of doers, caretakers, and achievers. We’ve juggled careers, families, marriages, heartbreaks, and health challenges. And yet, we are still learning — and that is the gift. Knowing better means doing better now, not regretting what we didn’t know then.
Knowing Better Through Experience
Each decade teaches us something new.
In our 20s, we often chase achievement.
In our 30s, we’re building — careers, families, homes.
In our 40s, we start hearing this question in the back of our mind: Is this really what I want?
And by the time we reach our 50s and 60s, many of us finally realize that fulfillment isn’t about perfection — it’s about alignment.
The beauty of midlife and beyond is that our knowledge comes with perspective. We see patterns, we understand our triggers, and we recognize what truly nourishes us — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
This is the season to celebrate that wisdom. To use what we’ve learned not as fuel for regret, but as fuel for reinvention.
Doing Better Starts Now
So much of today’s wellness culture targets women through the lens of regret — the creams that promise to erase years, the diets that promise to “get your body back.”
But you don’t need your old body back.
You need your best self now.
What if instead of asking, “What would I do differently if I knew then what I know now?” we ask, “What will I do differently today because I know better?”
That question invites growth, curiosity, and self-compassion. It opens the door to learning without judgment. It’s how we become women who lead by example — for our daughters, our friends, and even for our younger selves.
