Taking Up Space at the Table: First We Grieve the Body We Thought We Would Have
Episode 42: Taking Up Space at the Table: First We Grieve the Body We Thought We Would Have
Solo episode. Space in the Body, the first of the four dimensions of taking up space.
Education, not medical advice. This episode discusses fasting, GLP-1 medications and hormone therapy. Talk with your own healthcare provider about what is right for you.
I hid my vegetables in a napkin when I was three. By the time I was a teenager, the lesson at our table had changed from what to eat to how much room I was allowed to take up. Vegetables are now practically my profession, and I still carry the diet culture I learned from the same woman I later worked alongside at an eating disorders clinic. This episode is about the gap between knowing better and living better, and about what actually matters nutritionally for a woman over fifty once you stop eating for size.
In this episode, I talk about:
- The lesson at the table that did not start until puberty, and the two different rules my parents had about who was allowed to take up room
- Working at the UCLA eating disorders clinic alongside my mother, and carrying the diet culture home anyway
- Why women over fifty overload protein and miss the thing that matters more, which is fiber
- The protein range I work from and why the number goes up in your mid-sixties
- Intermittent fasting windows that help versus restriction wearing a new name
- Thirty-seven rounds of ProLon, and the honest reason I keep doing it
- How GLP-1 medications actually work, and the twenty-five to forty percent nobody mentions
- The three things I tell a woman who is starting one
- How your own body makes more GLP-1 in response to fiber, for free
- What changed in my closet, and the question to ask every piece of clothing you own
- “Savta, is that vegan?” and the word I made sure my granddaughters heard
- Why the goal shifted from smaller to stronger, and why the old goal is still in the room
One thing to do this week:
Add one high-fiber food to one meal a day, every day this week. If you have been skipping breakfast in the name of fasting, make it breakfast and make it fruit.
