Taking Up Space in the Exam Room: You Are the Leader of Your Medical Team

Season #3

Episode 41: Taking Up Space in the Exam Room: You Are the Leader of Your Medical Team
Guest: Dr. Jordan Emont, MD, MPH, MSCP

Education, not medical advice. This episode discusses hormone therapy and other treatments. Talk with your own clinician before changing anything about your care.

So many of us have walked out of an appointment feeling rushed, unheard, or told that what we are feeling is just aging. Dr. Jordan Emont is a board-certified OBGYN and certified menopause practitioner who built his practice around the opposite: appointments that run 60 to 90 minutes, for women who have been dismissed everywhere else. We talk about why the system keeps failing women our age, what is actually happening in our bodies that gets waved away, and what each of us can do to be heard.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why he finished residency at Columbia knowing almost nothing about menopause, and what he did about it
  • The first symptom of perimenopause, which is not a hot flash: “I just don’t feel like myself”
  • How estrogen loss drives blood pressure, cholesterol, insulin resistance, and visceral fat, and why almost no one connects those dots for you
  • Why menopause is not a gynecologic condition but a full body life transition, and why every specialty should be able to treat it
  • What happens to breast cancer survivors who are told hormones are off the table and then told nothing else
  • Why your doctor only has fifteen minutes, how reimbursement created that, and what direct primary care offers instead
  • The sexual health conversation 90 percent of women want their doctor to start, and how rarely it happens
  • The exact language that gets a clinician to lean in when you describe your symptoms

Dvora Citron, RN MS, NBC-HWC, is a Registered Nurse and National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, not your clinician, and Dr. Emont is not your physician. Nothing here creates a patient relationship. Hormone therapy is not right for everyone and depends on your own history. Do not start, stop, or change any treatment based on a podcast.
