A Doctor's Case for Yoga in Midlife: Strength, Balance and Calm

Season #3

Nothing in this episode is medical advice. It is education and lived experience. Anything you are weighing for your own health is a decision to make with your own healthcare provider, who knows your history and your whole picture.

Dr. Baxter Bell left a busy family practice to teach yoga, and he co-wrote Yoga for Healthy Aging. We talk about what yoga can and cannot do as you age, why strength comes first, how to protect your balance, and the quieter practices of breath and equanimity that you can keep for the rest of your life.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What Baxter let go of, and grieved, when he left medicine for yoga
  • Healthspan, not just lifespan: what yoga can and cannot do as you age
  • The four essential physical skills, and why strength is the place to start
  • How balance works, and how yoga helps protect your independence
  • Breath, meditation and equanimity: what yoga offers beyond the poses
  • Where to begin if you think you are too stiff, and what a retreat can give you that a weekly class cannot
