I Was the Last to Know

Season #1

Episode 23: I Was the Last One to Know (A Bridge, Part 2)

In 2012, recovering from back surgery on her therapist's couch, Dvora was asked a question she wasn't prepared for -- and her answer told her everything about what had been getting in her way. In this solo episode, she traces the story from that couch to a seventeen-course sushi dinner, and asks the question she wants every woman in midlife to sit with: what is the story you've been living inside for so long you stopped noticing it was a story?

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The question Dvora's therapist asked in 2012 -- and the answer that came out before she could think about it
  • The Yiddish word balabusta, and what it means to confuse a role with an identity
  • Why clinging to a blueprint keeps you from being present in the actual experience
  • The sushi dinner where Dvora didn't get her own way -- and got something better
  • How what's getting in the way is almost never the circumstances or other people
  • The only first step: seeing the story
