Beyond Dry January: A More Empowered Reset for Women in Their 60s
It’s Sunday night — that quiet, slightly tender moment when the weekend winds down and the week ahead comes into view. For many of us, this is when the “Sunday night blues” show up, along with the feeling that tomorrow is the first real start of the new year.
If that resonates, you’re not alone. And it’s worth pausing here — not to add pressure, but to notice what you’re carrying into this next chapter, and what you actually want to feel more of as the year unfolds.
Every January, we hear the same refrain:
Dry January. Reset. Detox. Start over.
And while the intention is understandable, I want to offer something more interesting — and far more sustainable — especially for women in their 50s, 60s, and beyond.
What if January wasn’t about giving something up…
but about tuning in?
Dry January Isn’t the Point - Awareness Is
For many women, Dry January starts with alcohol (or other "resolutions), but what they’re really craving is clarity:
- Better sleep
- More energy
- Less inflammation
- Improved mood
- A stronger connection to their body
The problem?
A single-month challenge doesn’t create lasting change — especially if it’s driven by restriction rather than intention.
What does create change is learning how to ask:
How does this actually make me feel?
That question alone can be transformational.
A Real-Life Reminder of Why Awareness Matters
I was reminded of this very personally over New Year’s Eve.
When I drink a glass of wine — or a cocktail (or two…) — I know it affects my sleep. And when my sleep is off, the quality of the entire next day is affected.
While out to an early New Year’s Eve dinner in New York with my family, my daughter gently nudged me not to order a glass of bubbly. It wasn’t judgmental — it was simply a reminder of something I already know about myself.
The next morning, January 1st, I was genuinely glad I hadn’t imbibed. I slept decently — and that made all the difference.
I had the energy to keep up with our wonderfully bubbly and energetic 3- and 5-year-old granddaughters: trekking through Manhattan, navigating crowds, and even climbing six flights up the Empire State Building stairwell, counting every single step out loud with my kindergartener granddaughter.
That day made something very clear to me — again.
Our daily choices around food, drink, rest, and movement aren’t about rules or restriction.
They’re about supporting our WHY.
For me, that “why” is having the energy, presence, and vitality to fully show up for the people and experiences I love.
And while I wasn’t able to keep up all of my self-care routines during our New York trip, I wasn’t starting from zero. I have a solid foundation at home — habits and practices that support me consistently — which gives me flexibility when life shifts.
That’s the difference between willpower and wisdom.
What Women in Their 60s Really Need Right Now
At this stage of life, the goal isn’t perfection.
It’s discernment.
It’s knowing how to:
- Enjoy a glass of wine when it truly adds pleasure
- Choose sparkling water or a mocktail without feeling deprived
- Understand how alcohol, sleep, stress, food, movement, and hormones interact
- Make decisions from self-respect — not rules
This is where real confidence comes from.
And yes — confidence is sexy.
A Different Kind of January Reset
Inside my upcoming Sexy in Your 60s Coaching Experience, we don’t do rigid challenges or “shoulds.”
Instead, we focus on:
- Body literacy — understanding your signals
- Energy management — not willpower
- Anti-inflammatory, plant-forward nourishment
- Mindful rituals that support sleep, mood, and vitality
- Choice — not deprivation
Women often come in thinking they’re signing up to “be better.”
What they discover is that they already have wisdom — they just haven’t been taught how to listen to it.
This Is Not About Giving Things Up…It’s About Gaining Something Back
Clarity.
Agency.
Energy.
Confidence.
And perhaps most importantly — trust in yourself.
If Dry January has ever felt heavy, restrictive, or short-lived, I invite you to consider a more expansive reset — one that supports you not just for 30 days, but for the life you’re actively living right now.
Sexy in Your 60s isn’t about age.
It’s about vitality, discernment, and feeling at home in your body — this decade and beyond.
